Little Roots – Early Childhood Music Education at 317 Main
Thank you for your interest in the Little Roots program at 317 Main Community Music Center! Having fun while learning music is a top priority in all of our Little Roots classes. Of equal importance is our commitment to providing a high-quality, developmentally-appropriate, music education curriculum. Research shows that early childhood (birth-6) is the ideal time to influence musical aptitude in the developing brain. Young children are naturally musical and, by cultivating musical intelligence at an early age, children can simultaneously develop valuable musical skills as well as those in other learning areas, such as body-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, and spatial intelligences.
In the Little Roots Family classes, children and their caregivers learn how to sing comfortably, move creatively, and play musical games in a group setting. Together, students learn how to: coordinate their voices to sing and remember tunes accurately; feel and identify the pulse (rhythm) of music; and develop their emotional responsiveness to the expressive language of music. $218/Family
In Little Roots Ready Set Grow! (3-4), children develop their independent learning skills in a group, without a parent or caregiver in the room, while getting a hands-on introduction to a variety of musical instruments. $218/Child
While our Little Roots Explorer series(5-6) instrument classes share some of the song repertoire from other Little Roots classes, they provide a more focused introduction to instrumental instruction in Ukulele, Fiddle, Djembe/Piano – with plenty of singing too. $218/Child
Uke Can Do It Together provides 5-6 year-olds and their caregivers an opportunity to learn beginning ukulele together.
The Little Roots curriculum emphasizes the use of folk and traditional songs and rhymes because of their melodic expressiveness, the natural flow of the language, their use of subjects that engage fantasy and storytelling, and their ability to connect across generations. The Little Roots program prioritizes learning by ear throughout the continuum – just as we learn to speak our first language before learning to read it – and this ear training remains key even as abstract musical concepts are introduced later in the Explorer classes. All Little Roots classes are taught by professionally-trained 317 Main teaching artists. $218/Family
