Sorcha Cribben-Merrill

Sorcha Cribben-Merrill Little Roots Teacher

Teaches: Little Roots

Teaching Philosophy: I believe making space for music exploration nurtures full creative expression.

Greatest Music Influences: My greatest music influences include my family, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Hank Williams, The Andrews Sisters, Django Reinhardt, Concrete Blonde, Bach, and on….

When I’m not making music: I’m in nature, dreaming up epic projects, on the dance floor, hanging with friends and family.

Current Music Projects: As a singer-songwriter, I often perform solo.  I also love rocking out with various duo projects (adding cello, bass or piano) and my band, Sorcha & The Clearing.  I also perform regularly for Assisted Living audiences.

Favorite place in Maine: Downeast Island (especially sailing to them)

To learn more:

Sorcha started making music at age 3 in Downeast Maine. She loves to support young musicians in expressing their natural ‘voice’ through whichever instruments and styles they want to explore.

Sorcha has been songwriting and performing for over 20 years. She sings and plays guitar, banjo and ukulele on stages nationwide. She was selected as an Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2012. Very active in the Portland music community, she performs solo, duo and with her band.

She graduated from Skidmore College cum laude with a major in Cultural Anthropology and a minor in Music. Since returning to Maine in 2003, Sorcha has been connecting music with healing and creative education. She co-created a music and literacy program for the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine and assists with the Center for Grieving Children’s Intercultural songwriting projects. She also supports young mothers in writing lullabies for their babies as part of the Lullaby Project (a Carnegie Hall Musical Connections program) and regularly performs jazz concerts for assisted living audiences, with a focus on memory care.

When not singing or learning to salsa dance, she can be found on, in or near the ocean.
