Since we launched the 317 Violin program at East End Community School in 2015, our students have been asking for summer learning opportunities.
In partnership with Maine Youth Rock Orchestra and East End, we successfully launched a Summer Violin Crew with seven rising 4th and 5th graders who met weekly in July and August with Kevin Oates, Conductor of the Maine Youth Rock Orchestra.
These budding violinists learned to read music and worked on listening and collaboration skills to form a mini pop orchestra.
Students were able to take our 317 violins home to practice and parents would sometimes drop in on the class. All families joined us for our finale where we shared a meal and celebrated the students’ creative growth and their commitment to violin.
“Through this project we made deeper connections with students and their families, and we were able to learn more about the barriers and desires related to their children’s music education.” – Jake Hoffman
